Robert Fritz Cunningham, Longtime Somers Resident, Dies at 76

Robert Fritz Cunningham passed away on Monday, Dec. 3 at home. He was 76.

Fritz was born on Oct. 31, 1936 in Johnstown, PA, and spent his childhood in the nearby town of New Florence. For more than 43 years, he lived in Somers with his wife Helen (Lunetta) Cunningham.

The man studied engineering at the University of Pittsburgh, later receiving a Masters in Engineering at Northeastern University. After working with major corporations including Bethlehem Steel, he became president of his own company, Cunningham Marine Hydraulics, Inc., which he operated for more than 30 years. He also retired as a Lt. Commander in the Naval Reserves.

A man of exceptional kindness and patience, Fritz was as well-liked for his easy-going sense of humor as he was for his unwavering generosity. In addition to his wife of more than 50 years, he is survived by his children: Robert F. “Bo” Cunningham, Jr. of Buffalo, NY, Glen Cunningham of Somers, NY, Jennifer Shaw of Shenorock, NY, and Dale Cunningham of White Plains, NY; and his sibling, William Cunningham of Greensburg, PA. Fritz was also beloved grandfather to eight grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Purdys United Methodist Church of North Salem or Somers Volunteer Fire Department.

First of all, I don't understand why teachers are paying for anything out of pocket when the supplyRead More lists that parents receive at the end of the summer are as long as their arms. Secondly, SOCIETY lets the kids down?!?!? I think the school taxes in Yorktown should be sufficient so that the teachers don't have to pay any out-of-pocket expenses. SOCIETY does not let the kids down, it is those who are in control of the school tax monies who let the kids down. Perhaps the administrators should take salary cuts, or maybe we should even eliminate some of those administrative positions. No teacher should have to pay for supplies out of pocket.
