Apple Picking: A Fall Tradition

Locals and urbanites pick apples at Wilkens Fruit & Fir Farm in Yorktown Heights.

Golden Delicious, McIntosh, Baldwin—oh my!

Nothing marks the start of fall more than apple picking at one of the Hudson Valley's beautiful orchards. On Saturday, people traveled from the New York metropolitan area and mixed with local residents at Wilkens Fruit & Fir Farm in Yorktown Heights to pick, pull and chomp on the many delicious apple varieties grown at the farm.

Whether they rode on tractor-pulled flat wagons or made the muddy trek on foot, people of all ages took to the fields. Some used their hands, others worked picking poles to reach the most coveted apples. When bags were filled, pockets were put to good use.

Of course, few could resist enjoying the fruit of their labor on the spot before heading back to the farm store for cider and doughnuts.

First of all, I don't understand why teachers are paying for anything out of pocket when the supplyRead More lists that parents receive at the end of the summer are as long as their arms. Secondly, SOCIETY lets the kids down?!?!? I think the school taxes in Yorktown should be sufficient so that the teachers don't have to pay any out-of-pocket expenses. SOCIETY does not let the kids down, it is those who are in control of the school tax monies who let the kids down. Perhaps the administrators should take salary cuts, or maybe we should even eliminate some of those administrative positions. No teacher should have to pay for supplies out of pocket.
