Lakeland High Wins NYS Field Hockey Championship; 5th Straight Title

A steady rain did not dampen the Lakeland High School Field Hockey team from making history as they rolled over Brighton has 7-0 to win their fifth consecutive Class B championship, a first in the state. The Hornets finished a perfect 22-0 in capturing its eighth state title tying it for the most in the state field hockey history.

Lakeland was in control from the start, when Dana Bozek scored the first of her three goals at 27:04. Step Scala,one of Lakeland's four senior captains, made it 2-0 at 22:22. Senior Captain Felicia Costanzo scored at 3:39 with an assist Senior Captain Gab Celentano to end the half ahead 3-0. Vestal's goalie made several spectacular saves to keep the score close in the first half.

Lakeland wasted no time putting it away in the 2nd half as Bozek, only a sophomore, scored at 27:33 off a corner pass from Celentano. Lakeland's Molly Fitzpatrick, a junior, made it 5-0 before Bozek scored her third to put Lakeland up 6-0. Megan Fahey, a freshman, closed the scoring. Lakeland's defense stifled Brighton throughout the game led by Senior Captain Kim Monteferante. Lakeland's starting goalie Alex Halpin, a junior, made four saves before giving way to Junior Amanda Santors (three saves). Sophomore Beames Madison closed out the game in goal with a late save to preserve the shut out.

It was the fourth title for Senior Captains Costanzo, Celentano, Scala, and Monteferante.

The rain finally let up just in time for the team's celebration and the awarding of the championship plaque. A police escort brought the team from the Yorktown border to the high school where a crowd of parents and supporters awaited their triumphant return

Lakeland High School Field Hockey began its defense of the New York State Class B championship Saturday morning with a overwhelming 4-1 win against Vestal High School. The game was played under a rare upstate November day with sunny skies and temperatures in the low 60s Saturday morning for their 9:30 AM start.

Lakeland has not lost to a New York State team since 2008.
