Yorktown Farmers' Market Opening Declared a Big Success

Epic opening day for Yorktown Farmers' Market plus what's new this week.

Many thanks to the shoppers, vendors, charities, businesses and local VIP's who came out to welcome the farmers' market in Yorktown. We couldn't have asked for better weather, sunny and warm, a perfect spring day.

At 9 a.m. Supervisor Michael Grace cut the yellow ribbon spanning the entry gates to the firehouse field on Veterans Road for the ceremonial opening. Patti from Fieldhome gave away re-usable bags to the early shoppers, followed by Rich Lopes and Rich Bobe giving away 100 Patch bags. (thank you, Plamena!)

Shoppers enjoyed meeting all the farmers/vendors and sampling their large variety of products. From produce to pickles, soaps to sauces, meats, honey, cheeses, baked goods and more there truly was something for everyone!

The Teen Center provided the crowd with entertainment. Zerena showcased her abundant talent singing and playing guitar under the pavilion.

This Saturday, May 26 we will welcome additional vendors. Celtic Farms and Nursery from Shrub Oak, Trotta's House of Pasta from Thornwood, and Gluten Free Dessert Kitchen from Harmony Hill of Clermont will join us.

Please enjoy the pictures from opening day. Be sure to stop by the manager's tent for the cookbook exchange (bring a gently used book to trade for one from our "library"). Feel free to tell us what you like or dislike about the market- we are happy to listen. We value your suggestions- its YOUR market Yorktown!

I'm so glad that Yorktown finally has a Farmers Market like most of the other communities in Northern Westchester. Just as the local grocery stores or other local stores that carry the other products available at a Farmers Market realize that everyone should have the right to sell their products. No one has told the local farms that they can not sell their produce at other Farmers Markets, they should not be against all Yorktown residents having the right to shop at our local Farmers Market. The best thing is that this will also benefit the Charity of the Week -- I do hope that they are not against that also.

It most certainly was an auspicious beginning, Karen, for your brainchild. It only will continue to prosper and serve our community well. Kudos to you and to Yorktown Engine Co. No. 1's past Fire Chief Marty McGannon for making this happen so quickly. The firehouse field is an ideal location, in middle of The Heights, with ample parking on site as well as on Veterans Road, and plenty of space to amble around, visit vendors, chat with other market-goers and enjoy the homegrown entertainment. Harrison Apar Field of Dreams Foundation is deeply grateful for being Charity of Week on the inaugural market day.

I hope that local stores will come to realize that the more people come into the shopping area, the more likely they are to shop at the stores! Congratulations on a successful opening.

Mr. Lachterman, You wrote "When Councilmen Bianco, Paganelli and Patel decided that theRead More Winery did not have the right to have a public hearing on their wetlands permit, they drew a line in the sand between personal interests and all business, large or small, in Yorktown." The wetland permit was NOT for the Winery. It was town land that we--the taxpayers--own. It's not "their" permit. Do you think that we should give away--for free--any town park/wetland to any business that asks. I'm not against working out an agreement whereby we charge the winery to develop parking and an outdoor cafe seating area on our (Yorktown owned) land. But you can bet your bottom dollar that I would want to codify it with a lease and charge him market rate for it. Capitalism, not communism. Those councilman made the right choice. It looked and smelled like a giveaway to a political ally of the supervisor. The winery had no inherent right to a public hearing on what we, the taxpayer, do with our land.
