Non-Profit 'Suz Crew' Aids Local Families Struggling with Cancer

Instead of donating funds to research, northern Westchester and Putnam volunteers aid local families directly to offset everyday bills.

When Kelly McKinley's mother, Suzanne, was diagnosed with Leiomyosarcoma, (LMS) in 2011, she describes the time as a "journey to hell."

Between constant doctor's appointments, surgeries, the everyday pain and uncertainty, McKinely said she was overwhelmed.

In 2011, group of locals banded together to support Sue by participating in the Peekskill dragon boat race "to rally around my mother and show her how much support she had," McKinley told Patch in an email.

"We also solicited donations for a local charity who's purpose is devoted to raising awareness about LMS," she shared. "Sadly, that year she passed away at the age of 57."

Since then, the dragon boat race team dubbed "Suz Crew" has grown into a full-fledged non-profit organization based out of Montrose that works directly with families affected by cancer.

"Our thought process, as a grassroots organization, was that while donating to 'cancer research' is extremely important and honorable, the amount of money we could raise would be better suited to help here in our local communities," McKinley explained. "Our funds might just be a drop in the research bucket, but locally, we could do amazing things."

And they have—from helping families make mortgage payments, or simply providing means to put dinner on the table and funding hotel rooms for patients traveling to receive treatment, the work of the organization is immediate and gratifying.

"I've worked with local school social workers who know of families who need help," McKinley shared. "We've had patients come to us on their own, or have found them through other our community networks."

Coming up, the all-volunteer group is planning out its spring 2014 fundraisers.

"It's the most meaning full thing I've ever done. It just feels so meant to be, and it makes me feel close to my mother," McKinley shared. "We are all volunteers finding our place within the organization, and looking forward to continuing to grow and make more of a difference."
