'Girl Rising' Film to 'Help a Girl Get an Education'

Fiona Wisehart, of South Salem, will present the film 'Girl Rising, a movement and a film' at the Katonah Village Library on Friday, Jan. 24 at 7 p.m. as part of a fundraiser she created to help a friend from Pakistan gain asylum in this country.

Wisehart's friend's name is not being released publicly at this time to ensure the protection of her and her family. The 18-year-old girl wants to continue her education and gain personal safety in the United States.

Wisehart launched a GoFundMe campaign on Dec. 31, 2013 and has already raised $850 toward her $10,000 goal.

"Girl Rising has given special permission for this film showing as all proceeds earned from the film showing will go directly to Fiona's friend and those helping her, a goal that is directly in line with those of Girl Rising," Wisehart's mother Kathleen Fay said.

Fay's daughter and the Pakistani girl met over the summer through a Girl’s Leadership Program.

"Fiona and others have created a round robin of this film showing, starting in Hastings-on-Hudson and then traveling around the country to the home towns of the various other young women who were involved with the leadership program this summer and wish to help their friend," Fay said.

The suggested donation to watch the screening of the film is $10. (This film is not recommended for children under the age of 10.) The Katonah Village Library is located at 26 Bedford Road in Katonah.
