U.S. Flag Retirement Ceremony

The American Legion has a strong history of educating the public on the proper display and care of our nation’s flag including the proper disposal of worn and unserviceable flags. On Saturday, June 16th, 2012 at 3:30 PM, Yorktown American Legion Post #1009 and the Yorktown Fire Department will conduct a U.S Flag Retirement Ceremony on the carnival grounds behind the Yorktown Fire Station located on Commerce Street. At present we have over 400 U.S. flags waiting respectful retirement at this Ceremony with more anticipated after the decoration of veterans’ graves over the Memorial Day weekend.

We invite all local Scouts and the public to join us for this educational ceremony where these American flags will be retired with respect. If you have any worn and unserviceable flags that you wish to be included in the ceremony we would welcome this. We ask that all flags be folded as per current US Flag Code with the exception of small flags normally attached/stapled to wooden sticks which should be left unfolded with the stick removed. All flags should be at the carnival grounds 15 minutes prior to the ceremony for inclusion in the ceremony. Scout Units that are unable to participate in the ceremony but wish to drop off flags for retirement can call to arrange drop off. All questions and RSVP’s can be made to American Legion Post #1009 at (914)-953-6807.
