1/4 Mile of Quarters, One Foot at a Time to Fight Cancer

The Yorktown Relay for Life Team, Stars of Hope is starting to fundraise early this year.   The Yorktown ACS Relay will take place on June 8, 2012 and Stars of Hope is planning on having at least a 1/4 mile of quarters raised by then.  Jean Scanlon, co-captain of Stars of Hope was looking for a new way to fundraise that was low cost for everyone involved.   So, for the 2012 Relay season, kicking off at booth 78 at Yorktown Community day, the team wants to raise a 1/4 mile of quarters!  A dozen quarters laid side-by-side measures a foot.  The team is trying to gather at least 15,840 quarters and collect $3960.    Jean Scanlon has been involved in Yorktown Relay for 5 years and is looking forward to fighting cancer one foot at a time.   "We figured by starting this early in the season, we have a shot of reaching our goal.  There are 36 thousand people in Yorktown.  If we can collect a quarter from each person, we will have exceeded our goal and raised  over $9000 to fight cancer!"  Her teammate, Laurie Aulicino believes, "It really fits our team motto- a little bit from  a lot! And we are hoping it goes so well- we can get to a 1/2 mile!".  The team plans on setting up quarter collection sites throughout town so get your quarters saved and join us in the fight against cancer starting at Yorktown Community day this Sunday.
