'Tip a Teacher Night,' Somers Halloween Parade, Treats for the Troops

Here are five things you need to know today, Oct. 22.

1. Tip a Teacher Night

The Yorktown Congress of Teachers, the Yorktown Food Pantry, and Traditions 118 Restaurant are teaming up to combat hunger. On Wednesday, Oct. 24 from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Traditions will host Tip a Teacher Night. Have your dinner served to you by the teachers of the Yorktown school district and all the tips as well as a portion of the proceeds, will be donated to the Food Pantry of Yorktown Community Help. 2. Somers YWCA Halloween Parade

The Somers YMCA Halloween Parade is on Sunday, Oct. 28. It starts at the CVS parking lot at 11 a.m. The festival runs until 4 p.m.

3. Halloween Treats for the Troops

Girl Scout troop 1591 will be collecting extra Halloween candy (individual pieces or full bags) to send to deployed troops overseas. Candy will be collected at the St. Patrick’s Craft Fair, St. Patrick's School, corner of Moseman Road and Hanover Road in Yorktown Heights on Nov. 3 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

4. 'Sock it to Being Healthy'

It's Red Ribbon Week at Yorktown schools this week. On Monday students can wear "silly or mismatched socks to school." Red Ribbon Week is an alcohol, drug and violence prevention awareness campaign.

5. Winter Clothing Drive

The Spanish Honor Society at Lakeland High School is collecting new or gently used hats, glove, scarfs, white dress shirts and ties for the needy children of I.S.L.A. in the Bronx to provide them with proper uniforms.
