Teen Center's Fundraising Dinner; Bone Marrow Drive; Yogurt Shop's Costume Contest

Here are five things you need to know today, Oct. 25.

1. Yorktown Teen Center's Fundraising Dinner

The Yorktown Teen Center is celebrating its third anniversary tonight. Organizers are holding the Center's annual fundraising dinner on Thursday, Oct. 25 at Colonial Terrace in Cortlandt Manor. 

Michelle Marchetti, the Teen Center’s 2012 Youth Advocate,former math teacher at Mildred E. Strange Middle School and an active Teen Center volunteer will be honored during the dinner. Read more about Marchetti and the dinner here.

2. Peekskill Man Makes False Statement to Police about Abduction in Yorktown

A 26-year-old Peekskill man, whose disappearance last week was being investigated as a possible abduction, has been arrested for lying to Yorktown police, officials said. Robert Jeter was arrested Tuesday and charged with making a false written statement, a misdemeanor. Read more about his arrest here.

3. Bone Marrow Drive on Sunday

Robert Santoriella, a Somers High School graduate, is holding a bone marrow drive on Sunday, Oct. 28 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Mahopac Firehouse. In June 2010 his son Jake, who was 8 years old at the time, was diagnosed with Leukemia. Jake, whose fraternal twin brother Chase was a perfect bone marrow match, is now in remission. The "Crafts for a Cure" fundraiser on Sunday will benefit The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

4. Aunt B's Costume Contest

Aunt B's is having a Halloween costume contest between Saturday, Oct. 27 through Wednesday, Oct. 31. To Enter the contest, wear your costume to Aunt B's frozen yogurt shop in Somers or Pleasantville. For details check out their website.

5. Free Flu Shots on Friday

On Friday, Oct. 26, Senator Greg Ball and the Hudson Valley Hospital Center will be co-hosting a Senior & Caregiver Health Fair at the Muriel Morabito Community Center in Cortlandt Manor. 

From 9 a.m. -12 noon, health professionals will offer cholesterol and blood pressure screenings. The Hudson Valley Visiting Nurse Service will also provide free flu shots on a first-come first-serve basis.

First of all, I don't understand why teachers are paying for anything out of pocket when the supplyRead More lists that parents receive at the end of the summer are as long as their arms. Secondly, SOCIETY lets the kids down?!?!? I think the school taxes in Yorktown should be sufficient so that the teachers don't have to pay any out-of-pocket expenses. SOCIETY does not let the kids down, it is those who are in control of the school tax monies who let the kids down. Perhaps the administrators should take salary cuts, or maybe we should even eliminate some of those administrative positions. No teacher should have to pay for supplies out of pocket.
