Sandy Watch: Emergency Planning Preparedness List

The Yorktown Police Department has issued a list of items you should bring in case you are required to evacuate.

In the event that residents are require to evacuate from your residence, the Yorktown Police Department has issued an emergency preparedness list with personal supplies residents should bring to accommodate them for three days away from their home.

"Below is a list of some items you may need but not think of during the time you are asked to evacuate and the time you actually evacuate," the Yorktown Police Department said in a press release. "This list is somewhat comprehensive and is provided to help you in your decision making during the stress of an evacuation. Take the time to review the list ahead of time and add to it any items unique to you as an individual."

Clothing 

  • Clothes for 3 days away from home (include sleeping) 
  • Shoes/Sneakers 
  • Jackets/Sweaters (evacuation shelters tend to be cool) 

Money

  • Cash 
  • Credit cards/Debit cards 
  • Checks 
  • Coins for vending machines

Bedding Material 

  • Blankets 
  • Sleeping bags 
  • Pillows 

Personal Hygiene Supplies 

  • Toothbrush/paste 
  • Dentures and cleaning materials 
  • Travel Size Soap/Shampoo 
  • Shaving items 
  • Deodorants 
  • Sanitary items (toilet paper, feminine products, diapers) 
  • Brush/comb
  • Tissues/paper towels/wet ones 
  • Hand towels/wash cloths

Medical Supplies 

  • Prescription Medications in original bottle showing doctor and medication name 
  • Aspirin/Advilfrylenol (in adult and child strength) 
  • Eye glasses/Contact lenses and lens solutions 
  • Band aids 
  • Antibacterial soap
  • Small first aid kit

Identification Documents

  • Driver's license
  • Social security card 
  • Health Insurance/Prescription cards 
  • Non-resident ID information if not a U. S. citizen

Baby Supplies (where applicable)

  • Formula/baby foods 
  • Snacks 
  • Diapers/powder/baby wipes 
  • Toys
  • Pacifier/Bottles 
  • Infant carrier

Miscellaneous Items 

  • Zip Lock Freezer Bag containing: Copy of insurance policies Bank Account records Photocopy of property deed Photocopy of c|river's license Photocopy of social security cards Photocopy of Immunization records
  • Portable AM/FM Radio with 2 sets of spare batteries 
  • Address book (include doctors' names in case of emergency) 
  • Cell phone/pager/palm pilot 
  • Walkman/Portable CD player W/headphones (for teens) 
  • Small pad of paper 
  • 2 pencils/pens
  • Gum, candy, health bars 
  • Small flashlight with 2 sets of spare batteries 
  • 5 small kitchen garbage bags 
  • Whistle

Very important for property owners to document damages to personal property and structure caused by hurricane Sandy. Taking photos with digital camera or even phone camera will reduce potential issues later on if insurance claims are needed.
