Halloween Kids' Costumes: Safety in Yorktown and Somers

The National Safety Council has important tips parents should know.

The kids will be putting on their costumes a lot this month, for parades, contests, parties, trick-or-treating....Here are six super safety tips from the National Safety Council that every parent should know about Halloween costumes:

  • Purchase or make Halloween costumes from flame-resistant materials.
  • Pick brightly colored costumes or add your own reflective tape so motorists can see them.
  • Attach your child’s name, address, and phone number somewhere inside the costume.
  • To avoid tripping, make sure your child’s costume is not too long, and that shoes are the proper size.
  • Use washable face paint instead of masks, so your child’s vision isn’t compromised.
  • Keep your walkway free of debris so that children coming to your house won’t trip or fall.

Show off your kid's costume—enter a photo in the Yorktown-Somers Patch Halloween contest. Details coming Oct. 15!

First of all, I don't understand why teachers are paying for anything out of pocket when the supplyRead More lists that parents receive at the end of the summer are as long as their arms. Secondly, SOCIETY lets the kids down?!?!? I think the school taxes in Yorktown should be sufficient so that the teachers don't have to pay any out-of-pocket expenses. SOCIETY does not let the kids down, it is those who are in control of the school tax monies who let the kids down. Perhaps the administrators should take salary cuts, or maybe we should even eliminate some of those administrative positions. No teacher should have to pay for supplies out of pocket.
