1. Flags at half-staff today for Marine

Gov. Andrew Cuomo has directed that flags on state government
buildings be flown at half-staff today in honor of a New York City Marine who
died July 17. Lance Cpl. Jabari N. Thompson of Brooklyn died of wounds
sustained July 13 during combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He

was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd
Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.

2. Little Shop of Horrors

The creepy and comical musical
hits the Yorktown Stage for six performances beginning with a 1 p.m. matinee Saturday.
The cult classic focuses on the nerdy Seymour
Krelborn, who works at a flower shop while nurturing a bloodthirsty plant. A
preview will be posted at 5 p.m. today on Patch.

3. Police blotter

Two men are charged in the theft
of baby merchandise; motorists face drunken driving, license, registration
charges; a teen is accused of shoplifting; and more. Coming at 3 p.m. today on
Patch.

4. How well do you know Yorktown?

5. No relief from heat

Today will be sunny with a high around 96 and heat index values as high as 104, according
to the National Weather Service. Tonight will be mostly clear, low around 66. Saturday
will be sunny with a high again around 96 and isolated afternoon showers and thunderstorms.

First of all, I don't understand why teachers are paying for anything out of pocket when the supplyRead More lists that parents receive at the end of the summer are as long as their arms. Secondly, SOCIETY lets the kids down?!?!? I think the school taxes in Yorktown should be sufficient so that the teachers don't have to pay any out-of-pocket expenses. SOCIETY does not let the kids down, it is those who are in control of the school tax monies who let the kids down. Perhaps the administrators should take salary cuts, or maybe we should even eliminate some of those administrative positions. No teacher should have to pay for supplies out of pocket.
