Stone Barns Center in Pocantico Hills is Hiring; Volunteers and Teenaged Counselors Also Sought

Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture in Pocantico Hills is looking to fill both salaried jobs and unpaid volunteer positions in its Farm Camp program, now entering its tenth season. Click here to download an in-depth brochure describing Farm Camp 2014.

The nonprofit farm and education center operates a four-season farm dedicated to developing a healthy and sustainable food system through the educating and training of young farmers.

Vacancies with salaries fall into the following four categories: (1) Farm Camp Assistant Director, (2) Farm Camp Counselor, (3) Farm Camp Instructor and (4) Farm Camp Cooking Specialist. Candidates need to be available from Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., from June 16, 2014 through August 15, 2014. 

Hundreds of volunteers participate in the Center's programs and work in activities such as administration, agriculture, livestock and visitor services (classes, tours and workshops).

Salaried positions and job responsibilities

Assistant Director. Assist with staff training and lesson plan development. Help the Camp Director as needed. Act as medical liaison for the camp. This is a seasonal, part-time position with an hourly wage commensurate with experience.

Counselor.
 Assist the Farm Camp Instructor in supervising and teaching campers. Share supervision of mealtime and recreation time. Participate actively in all activities (i.e. egg collecting, tomato harvesting). This is a seasonal, part-time position with an hourly wage of $8 per hour.

Instructor. Supervise, teach and inspire a group of ten to twelve campers. Serve as a role model for campers and mentor junior staff. Prepare and teach lessons in sustainable agriculture, organic gardening, animal care, natural crafts and cooking. Share supervision of mealtime and recreation time. This is a seasonal, part-time position with an hourly wage of $12 per hour.

Cooking Specialist. Plan and execute creative, hands-on cooking activities for groups of ten to twelve campers. Lead three to five cooking classes per day. Work with the Center's farmers to source as many items as possible from the farm. A certification in standard first aid and CPR is required by June 1, 2014. This is a seasonal, part-time position with an hourly compensation commensurate with experience.
