Sarro to Run Marathon to Raise Money for Cancer Research

Mary Jo Sarro, M.Ed., "Mamma Sarro" to run in 2012 ING NYC MARATHON on November 4, 2012 as a Fundraising Marathon Mom to raise funds for crucial cancer research.

Food Renaissance founder and author, Mary Jo Sarro, M.Ed., “Mamma Sarro,” is teaming up with Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center to run as a Marathon Mom to raise funds for crucial cancer research at the 2012 ING NYC Marathon on Nov. 4, 2012.

Mamma Sarro, a food educator and the creator of Sarro’s Synergy of Food, is a first time marathoner and says the challenge of marathon training is staggering but she was inspired by the pediatric cancer patients that she has seen in the Department of Pediatrics at MSKCC in Manhattan.

“Each day those kids are up against health challenges beyond compare. They face their challenges with courage and dignity far beyond their years, in an uplifting community and environment within the hospital,” Sarro said. “We must do everything within our power to inspire and speak to everyone within reach of our voice to raise the funds necessary for vital research that is saving the lives of loved ones from all over the country, every day.”

Mamma Sarro decided to combine the forces of Team Sarro and run with Fred’s Team on behalf of MSKCC. She traded her cooking apron for her running gear and then hand crafted and sewed her own unique design for her personal running cap with special pockets for her running needs.

"When I first started training months ago with my husband and coach, Chris, I could only run 2 miles. Chris designed a special training regimen, which he had previously used when he raced in the Cycle for Survival Fundraising Event for MSKCC,” recalls Mary Jo.

“Our ongoing training includes our Renaissance Run for Better Health throughout NYC, the Hudson Valley, and New York State community. We have exercised together for many months and slowly we have built up to reach the final 20 mile pre-marathon training goal, which will enable me to take on the NYC Marathon and to go national in our fundraising,” she explained.

"Now we are turning our attention throughout the country to fundraising activities for cancer research that can benefit everyone. It is a race to raise the funds now for research as quickly as possible and we need everyone to help,” she added.

“I will run the 26.2 miles of the 2012 ING NYC MARATHON on November 4, 2012, across the bridges, streets, avenues and through Central Park in NYC, inspired by daughter, Michelle, currently in remission. Team Sarro will carry the support of family, friends and community supporters who will help to fund MSKCC’s research to save lives. The research will benefit everyone, everywhere.”

Mamma Sarro says, “No one knows what hidden challenges life has coming around a blind curve. Every family and every person faces what seem to be insurmountable challenges at some point in life. As a community, we need to support each other to face those challenges together.”

Everyone’s support is greatly appreciated.

First of all, I don't understand why teachers are paying for anything out of pocket when the supplyRead More lists that parents receive at the end of the summer are as long as their arms. Secondly, SOCIETY lets the kids down?!?!? I think the school taxes in Yorktown should be sufficient so that the teachers don't have to pay any out-of-pocket expenses. SOCIETY does not let the kids down, it is those who are in control of the school tax monies who let the kids down. Perhaps the administrators should take salary cuts, or maybe we should even eliminate some of those administrative positions. No teacher should have to pay for supplies out of pocket.
