Calling Everyone!

Please help me with a journalism project by answering one simple question!

Hello,

I am doing a project for a Web Reporting class and could use your help.

The project has to do with researching charities and non-profit organizations and I am looking to gather some information. A component of my project requires crowd sourcing, meaning that information is gathered by putting a question out for public response. The responses are then gathered and used as a form of research towards the project. I would appreciate if you could take a moment of your time to answer the following question to generate local responses.

"What provokes you to donate money to a non-profit or charity organization?"

If you can please respond in the comment box below and include your first and last name and the town where you currently live, that would be great. Location is a driving force behind crowd sourcing. **Responses will be used for the sole purpose of my class and will published on a blog site that is only used in my class.

Thank you for your help!

Don Calabrese - Fishkill (work in Buchanan) - I believe in giving back to the community where we live and work. There are so many causes that are vying for support, it becomes somewhat overwhelming to decide where to focus resources. Sadly enough, many of the major problems happening all over the world are also happening in our back yard. I prefer to help the population affected by our living and working in our own community. After extensive research to ensure that the funds are actually being used in our immediate area, I have found that the United Way of Westchester and Putnam helps the community on many levels. The development of children's learning programs, elder support and the 2-1-1 emergency help line have solidified my decision. In addition, the United Way offers a discount pharmacy link with participating drug stores that helps all residents who are not fortunate enough to have health benefits. All community interactions are monitored and reports are available for public review.

Hi Chris - its dad.
Why do we give to charities or non-profits? Its because we as human beings are a brother/sisterhood and we need to support one another for the good of all of us. We give to those who suffer hardships so that we may be able to put a smile on someones face. We give to cancer research charities so that one day in your life time, it will not cause the number of deaths that it currently does. We give to children charities so that we can help those inocent souls who have been abandoned, they didn't deserve it, and its not their fault. We give food and clothing to the homeless for their survival and the hope that one day they will be able to get back on their feet. We give to our wounded warriors who sacrificed their bodies and lives for us so that we can live in a country where we are free to express our first ammendment rights. We give to local sports teams and organizations so that our children can have a safe place to play and to understand the meaning of commitment, sportsmanship and fair play. It should be our commitment to as human beings to help one another as much as possible to make this a better place to live. Great project. Love you , Dad

I donate because I can, life has been a ball for me. I survived WWii, Korea and VN and High School at NT earlier. I give to organizations with a great reputation and to others who don't keep bugging me with mail. Local organizations are favored and those who don't get the big donations. Emotion plays a big part too, Semper Fidelis.
HELEN JOHNSON GRISHMAN April 28, 2012 at 02:56 pm
I donate mostly through my service club, Rotary
Individually, I am usually compelled when someone I know is afflicted with a terrible illness such as Juvenile Diabetes, Epilepsy, Cancer, PolyCystic Kidney Disease, Liver Disease or Making Headway, the brain tumor charity here in Chappaqua. I am skeptical of most charities and always want to know what percentage goes to administration and what is the salary and expense account of the CEO. The Red Cross is never on my list and the Salvation Army always is. It is only by luck or chance or the Grace of God that any one of us is in a position to help another. Giving is a way of expressing gratitude for our family's health and well being.
Susie Danziger April 29, 2012 at 12:05 pm
Hi Christine,
Susie from Bedford. I give to nonprofits whose mission touches me personally in some way. I believe people give to people so an effective solicit is usually one where someone who I am connected to has reached out to me and made a personal request. I can never resist supporting a friend who is walking, running, swimming for a cause that is personal to them and have become a perennial sponsor! Good luck.

I typically donate to charities that I have a connection with, i.e. family member or friend has been afflicted with or affected by or is affiliated with donation process thus feeling I can be closer to the charitable process if I know someone involved in the organization in some way. I have randomly donated as well however typically it is a charity I feel connected to in some way through myself or someone I know. Good luck Chickie Love you, Mom :)

I try to focus my donations in ways that help one person or one family but have the potential to change the path of future generations.
Many of my donations support education, because that helps people improve their own lot and help others, and it can break a cycle of poverty for the children of the person who got educated. I feel especially strongly about supporting the education of girls/women. I give to the schools that provided financial aid for me. They gave me a chance to reach my potential. I give (and work on the board of) KEEP, the Katonah Education Exchange Program, which supports girls in India at risk for being sold into slavery in brothels. Their education offers them another path in life. And it helps prevent their children from being born in brothels. You can read about KEEP in the Patch. Just search for KEEP and the book "Half the Sky". 100% of the money goes to support the girls. We know. We've been there to make sure. And we pay all our own expenses out of pocket. That means a lot to me. I also give to the Community Center in Katonah, and Friends of Karen and other charities that help struggling families. I hope that supporting families will help children grow up with more options to live a rewarding life. And I just can't stand the idea of a child who isn't having a spectacular holiday. I live in Katonah.

Hi Christine! I like donating to certain causes like pediatric cancer, something that you can't help not wanting to help. When it comes to other random charities, I am more likely to donate if there is some sort of fun event surrounding it-- for example, I registered with my friend for the "Color Run" in Philadelphia. It was just a $40 fee but it is supposed to be a fun event that hopefully brings some of the Philadelphia community together. Hope this helps!!

Hey girl! I like donating because it can really make a positive difference. For example, donating to a cause that has affected someone personally, like relay for life or a cancer organization, can help find a cure and help those who are affected by it a lot better. Making a positive difference is always a result :]

local, local , local! I like to look at how the organization works and generally choose those that can pass on the most assistance to the individuals they help. Support Connection and Community Cares are two such unbelievable organizations.
In business we find it helpful to reach out to our customers and help support their local charities as well. We share with them the needs of the charities we support and in turn we are happy to help with their local charities. I live in Chappaqua

Generally, I donate to charities that in some way tug at my heartstrings. In most cases the charity benefits children or animals since both are incapable of caring for themselves. There are so many worthwhile charitable organizations that it is often difficult to deny a request for assistance. Christine good luck with the project, you made me think! Aunt Louise

I bought a bike at a Cancer fundraiser for one of my sister's best friend And the numerous church, school, and sports events! I have never put too much thought as to why, it just happens. Best wishes - and I love your Aunt Louise!

I like to donate to charitable organizations because it is a way of giving back to people in need. I prefer to donate to LOCAL organizations. Uncle Frank set-up the Frank & Donna Mason Endowment for Southern CT University. The scholarship goes out every year to a person who has a single parent as Uncle Frank had a single parent when he attended Southern. Brigdeport University was in need of donations to restore art work they had and wanted to display again. Toys for Tots every Christmas. We love picking out the toys for children who will probably get only ONE present. It is our Christmas tradition. The local church which has a christmas tree and each ornament on the tree is requesting things people need. The basics, pajamas, diapers, scarves & gloves, etc. I take as many ornaments as I can. This gives me a very good feeling as I am helping people in my community. The food pantry in Bridgeport. The Connecticut Veterans Association The Shelter Connection on Long Island- where Amber came from. I do donate to people I know who are participating in larger charities like Relay for Life, Susan B. Komen & Thon. . All the best to you on your project Chris. Love you, Aunt Donna
Paula May 3, 2012 at 08:54 am
I give to local animal-related charities more than the larger ones or ones based in Long Island and other places. There are many local dog and cat-placement groups that need help and are actually at times harmed by the larger groups bringing their adopt-a-vans around here or having big groups that fly animals from other areas here when we have shelters that can't accommodate more.
I also don't give to large associations with slick offices and large salaries for their group, such as the Alzheimer's Association. When I needed help hen trying to better care for my mother when she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's they couldn't find a way to assist me in getting her better care in dealing with her needs, but they were extremely efficient in paying rents in fancy buildings and sending out mailings. If I see slick mailings, I don't respond. The Salvation Army is about the only large group I believe in that is large.

Since I am a poor college student, I have limited resources that I can donate to. I usually donate if I know somebody directly affected by something or if someone needs my help immediately. I like to help when I can.
Danica Sanders May 3, 2012 at 05:25 pm
Like many people said, I respond to places that have some sort of personal connection in my life. I also would say ones that are more advertised (I am a sucker for those commercials). But I prefer donating to organizations where you feel safe that your money is going where you want it to go- so maybe ones that have had recognition in the past and display what the donations will do for the company and how it will help! Good luck Christine! :)

I'll usually donate to a charity or non-profit organization if what they are affiliated with relates to me. For example my brother has diabetes so anytime there is fund raising for JDRF or Yale New Haven hospital, I usually donate. Love youuu Christine! :)

Nonprofits and charities really help make a big difference in most of our personal lives and in society as a whole, so I enjoy donating whenever possible. I wear a Livestrong band (and actually bought a 10-pack of them a few years ago) because cancer has touched my family and I strongly support the fight against cancer. I'll also donate to nonprofits that help my community, such as the local Lion's Club or the fire department, and I enjoy giving back to my high school whenever possible.
Usually, I don't make straight monetary donations, but I like supporting charities and nonprofits at events (like vendor booths) and gain something that I can proudly adorn (like a T-shirt, wristband, etc.) to show my support for the organization. I'm from way out in Beacon Falls, Conn.
Mike Parlitsis May 6, 2012 at 07:43 pm
I usually donate to charities who stand for causes that either hit close to home for me or whose cause I strongly believe in. Relay for Life is easily my favorite cause to donate for and is an event I have participated in for over 7 years now. St. Baldrick's is also another organization that I love and never hesitate to donate to.
Anthony Messina May 7, 2012 at 02:43 am
Usually when I donate to charities its because of what they stand for. I have been affected a lot in the past by cancer and so whenever someone I know asks for a donation for a cancer fundraiser I usually donate to that. Also i usually donate to foundation that works with disabled children because i have been affected by that a lot in my past as well. I also want to be a Special Education teacher in the future so I feel that by donating to these organizations will bring me good karma for the future. I'm also from Old Tappan, New Jersey
Morgan May 7, 2012 at 01:33 pm
I have always been likely to donate to charities but in the past few years non-profits have become much more prominent, so much that I am hoping to pursue a career in non-profit organization. With that being said, I will generally donate to any charity (pending I have the financial ability/resources). Admittedly, I am more likely to donate to a children's charity as opposed to an animal shelter. Also, when and where does have an impact on if/how much I will donate. I am more likely to hand money to a person for a cause or in a drop box at a table in a student union or outside a grocery store as opposed to the cans you sometimes see at local eateries and town delis. I was always raised knowing that there are many people less fortunate than I and my family and I would always give as much as we could, whenever we could. It's important to keep in mind that someone can always use a helping hand.

Obviously, I'll donate to a charity if if it has some sort of meaning to me. For example, one of my relatives had alzheimer's, so if I ever have the chance to donate to a charity that does research on alzheimer's, I will. That being said, I don't find myself donating to charities all that often, nor do I see myself changing my ways in the near future. Not because I don't want to find cures or help people, but rather because I simply either don't have the money, or I could use that money for my own personal wellbeing.

There is nothing worse than the dinner time phone call "counting on your support" - it's a real turn off and I am less likely to respond. It's impossible to give to every charity so I choose causes dear to my heart - animals/ environment/ personal connection/ local organizations. I also think it is important include the kids in your charitable giving and make them realize everyone can help, even if it's not in a monetary way - baking, volunteering etc... it all helps (Katonah)

There are a few reasons why I donate.
First off that feeling i get when somebody who I am donating to thanks me is the best feeling in the world. It's why I did habitat for humanity and why I volunteer in my hometown as well. Also I do it because it just makes me feel happier, I want people who are a little bit worse off to get that joy that I get from helping them. Steven Robertson, Wallingford,CT

Montville, NJ I think it is important to donate to charities that mean something to each individual person. I have two cousins with autism, and my whole family is very involved in organizations that spread autism awareness. Non-profit organizations are a fantastic way to get involved in a community, and to support a cause that is important to the individual.
Caitlin Fox May 10, 2012 at 05:39 pm
I donate for a couple of reasons:
First, I donate to causes that are near and dear to me. I love animals and have had pets all my life. It kills me to see innocent animals suffering so I donate to different organizations and charities that protect them in any way they can. Also, I try to give to people who are less fortunate then I am. It feels good to give something to a person or help them out as much as you can.
