Twist Frozen Yogurt Bar & Sweet Shop Opens in Yorktown

The self-serve frozen yogurt place also offers soft-serve ice cream, dairy-free, non-fat and no sugar added options. Of course, you can always give it a personal twist and add your own toppings.

Kids and adults, looking to indulge in a delicious treat, will have to look no further than the self-serve , now open in Yorktown.

The shop will serve 12 nutritious self-serve frozen yogurt flavors with more than 60 toppings, both chilled and dried. It also offers dairy-free flavors, no sugar-added and non-fat options for its health-mindful customers.

When you walk into the colorful store, located in what's known as the Roma building, you have the option of sitting in one of the light up chairs, or the pink couch along the wall. Immediately to the left, there is a candy station with 16 bins of candy, which you can scoop and place in a bag – either for purchase or as toppings for your frozen treat. Everything is weighed and sold by the ounce.

The shop, located at 2022 Saw Mill River Road, is owned by Somers residents Kevin and wife Teresa McKenna, Mary Beth and husband Michael Daly.

"We wanted to go for a really whimsical kind of place, like Whilly Wonka or Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium," Teresa McKenna said. "Just something whimsical, something fun, where people will have fun."

It was really the childhood dream of Michael Daly, who remembers growing up in White Plains and walking to his favorite, old-fashioned ice cream parlor. He could still smell the sweet scent and always wanted to open up his own shop one day.

"It's been a lifelong dream," he said. "To see it come to fruition is incredible, very fulfilling."

He said the store looks exactly how he envisioned it would. Seeing the smiles on the kids' faces and all the fun they would be having is what brings him incredible joy. The McKenna's have two kids and the Daly's have three kids, so everything they've done, they've kept their own kids in mind, they said.

"It really does bring the kid in everyone," McKenna said of the shop. "You just can't wait to grab a cup and fill it up."

McKenna said they would also be serving soft-serve ice cream – vanilla, chocolate or twist – which is unusual to most frozen yogurt shops.

"There is going to be something for everyone," she said. "The possibilities really are endless of what you can do or what you can make. We have the most flavors and toppings and choices. This is the place to be."

McKenna said she does not want people to be discouraged if there are no available parking spots at the front of the building, because there is plenty of parking at the back of the building, she said. Owners are also planning on placing a bench right outside the store and have applied for a permit from the town to create an outdoor sitting area.

"I'm hoping this is the beginning of a rebirth," she said. "People will see it's OK to take a risk and open a business. The town will appreciate we're opening a business and investing money."

Her husband agreed and said they've made a long-term investment and are here to say.

McKenna said the shop will sponsor various community events and sports teams, create jobs and support the local economy.

"We want to make sure we become part of the [Yorktown] community," she said.

In addition, Twist will also be selling t-shirts and hats with fun slogans, pre-packaged frozen yogurts, yogurt pies and beverages. The owners will also offer a customer loyalty card – after 10 purchases, you get your next 6 ounces for free.

"Every time I walk through that door, it all comes back to me," Michael Daly said. "Making that three-mile walk to the ice cream shop and this makes me really happy. For me, it's not just a business, it's a lifetime dream. I'm so excited."

Twist is located at 2022 Saw Mill River Road in Yorktown Heights, in the Roma Building. It's open seven days a week, Monday through Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. For more information call 914-302-2600.
