As we approach another "Support-A-Walk" I take a moment to reflect on all the past walks I have taken part in.
Back in the 90's I participated in my first walk. My mom had been diagnosed with ovarian cancer and was a survivor and I volunteered behind the tables and wore my mom's name on my back. It read "I walk in celebration of my mom."
In the years that followed I continued helping out and walking and getting great inspiration as I always did from the walk.
Sadly, one walk I walked in memory of my sister-in-law's sister Teri, who had lost her battle with breast cancer. Still, the hope and inspiration the walk offered was amazing. Some years later my sister-in-law also got the devastating news that she too had breast cancer and our next walk was in her honor...Margaret is a survivor!
I realized that each year the walk meant more and more to me.
In 2010, I myself was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and yet again the walk took on a special meaning as I battled my disease I wore on sign on my back celebrating myself!
This Oct. 7 I will walk again as a " Survivor." I will smile as I see the energy and hope that continues to surround me, I will watch everyone line up in front of the beautiful pink & teal balloon arch, their faces filled with love and hope, ready to walk for a cause near and dear to their hearts.
I will see babies in strollers being pushed by survivor moms. I will see daughters walking beside survivor moms and sisters and aunts!
Yes, I will also see the faces of those missing loved ones, but I will see the comfort in those faces knowing they are surrounded by those who care and understand. I will see pups wagging tails. I will see pink and teal ribbons and t-shirts galore. As I walk I will hear music and people cheering us on! There will be tribute signs honoring loved ones. There will be snacks and drinks and prizes!
When the walk is over I will have a good feeling, because after a successful walk I will feel joy in the knowledge that Support Connection will be able to continue bringing their free programs and services to women with breast and ovarian cancer.
Please join me on Oct. 7 at FDR Park. If you see me please come up to me and say hello!
