Springfest: Battle of the Bands 2011

Annual event draws local musicians and fans to showcase local high school talent.

Seven high school bands squared off at the seventh annual Springfest Battle of the Bands Friday night at the . 

At least half of each band was made up of students from Yorktown or Lakeland High Schools by rule, and each  played their own unique style of music. 

"It was a lot of fun but I feel like I'm going to pass out," said Yorktown High School's Kristina Koller who recently formed a folk duo called OK with Lakeland's Omar Ramirez.

Performing at a much higher decibel level was Cooler Than Jesse, made up of three YHS students joined by two from Somers High School. "Not our best but it went OK," said guitarist and singer Joris Dyckman of the group's performance, their first time performing on stage together.

"I'm tired but it was a lot of fun," singer Erik Alvarado said.

A trio of YHS students formed the band Still Young which included bass player Joe Schultz playing a didgeridoo on one song. 

The event was presented by the Yorktown Recreation Department and sponsored by the Putnam County Savings Bank, which provided cash prizes; and the Yorktown Teen Center and Police P.B.A./DARE program, which provided the sound technician and equipment.  

The top three finishers were US, in first place, followed by Jif & The Choosy Mothers, and finally The Cataline Wine Mixers.
