Mark Twain! On Stage at Westchester Community College

Westchester Community College presents Mark Twain! On Stage. Actor John Chappell portrays the author in a presentation that is more than a comedy, more than a drama, and more fun than one can imagine. Twain’s stinging commentaries on the human race, politics, slavery, and religion are still stunningly fresh and blazingly funny. This is a live, hilarious, nearly two hour recreation of the author in all his wit and wisdom, as one might have seen him 100 years ago.

The dramatic program moves audiences from laughter to poignant reflection, with some occasionally squirming at his savage irony. All the while, they are captivated by a perfect illusion of the living presence of the man himself. “I wonder if God invented man because he was disappointed in the monkey? You just have to remember: Man was made at the end of the week’s work, when God was tired,” Twain said. Another comment was “To be good is noble…to teach others to be good is nobler still…and a lot less trouble.”

“John Chappell  is terrific,” says Regis Philbin. Chappell is fascinated by the material he performs. He has read and studied Twain’s life, absorbing the man’s character from his writings, which are so extensive that they have never been completely collected or published. He reminds us that much of Twain’s commentary applies to complexity of our modern world.
