Les Miserables School Edition

Ossining High School Drama Club Presents: Les Miserables School Edition

Ossining High School’s production of Les Miserables School Edition opens this April 7th, but the Ossining Drama Club students are no strangers to student empowerment and revolution! In October, the club performed Stand and Deliver, portraying the true story of high school math teacher Jaime Escalante’s struggle to educate students and change lives in a 1980s’s East Los Angeles barrio school. Club members took Escalante’s message of education to heart as they participated in Ossining High School’s first student-directed performance, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) in January.  This production featured not only student actors, but student directors, stage managers, technicians, and more.  Through these experiences, Drama Club members learned their roles both on stage and behind the scenes, participating in every aspect of the production process from costume and set design to construction and advertising.

In today’s political climate, Ossining High School students are more than ever understanding the power of the people in the face of injustice. The students are hard at work on one of the most epic and challenging musicals to ever cross the high school stage, Les Miserables School Edition. Throughout three months of rehearsals, over fifty dedicated students in the cast and crew have investigated all of Victor Hugo’s messages about humanity, redemption, justice and society. The production has turned into a service learning project where students are meeting people out in the community, selling advertisements, and collecting old furniture to build and design their own original barricade and set.  In this learning experience, these students have created a remarkable show that showcases their passion and talents.
