Yorktown Teens Get Flexibility and Strength Training

The Yorktown Teen Center is offering teens a new program, "Flexibility and Strength Training" every Friday night from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The Yorktown Teen Center is offering teens a new program, "Flexibility and Strength Training" every Friday night from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. The classes for free in collaboration with the Yorktown Parks and Recreation Program.

The center was looking for activities to help teens reduce stress, when Roxanne Gamory walked in and offered the center free classes for the teens and their family. The teens quickly enjoyed their “Flex” class and their instructor, “Ms. G.” 

Gamory, in the New Year, will be opening Calabash Yoga, a hot yoga studio in Cortlandt Manor. She plans to offer a variety of styles of yoga. Meanwhile, she has been enjoying her classes for the teens.

"They are like sponges, so open and eager to learn," she said. "I enjoy their spontaneity and need to be challenged."

"That class was really a work out!” said Robert Kramer, a freshman at . He said he was forced to come but, came back the following week with three of his friends.

"The junior year is stressful for many high school students, so we have been looking for activities that would help reduce their stress in healthy ways," Teen Center board of directors president Helena Rodriguez said. "Many teens that come to the center are athletic and this seems to work. They definitely get a workout, learn to relax through breathing and the next week they return for more."

Parents are welcomed to join in one of the two sessions (Friday at 6:30 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m.) if space permits. Teens have priority. A Yorktown Parks and Recreation form can be completed at the Teen Center or Parks and Recreation office for those interested.
