"You have been by each other side as you built a life together," he told the couple. "I am sure life has brought you wonderful blessings and difficult challenges over the years."

He asked them, as they celebrate their anniversary and reflect back over the years as husband and wife, if they wished to reaffirm the vows they took years ago.

"You renew your vows pledging your eternal love for each other, awaiting what life brings in the years ahead," he read and asked them to promise to "love, honor and keep" each other "for better or worse, in sickness and in health for as long as [they] shall live."

Sal Lagonia jokingly said the secret to their marriage are the magic words "Yes, dear!" and added that what attracted him to his wife was her intellect, good humor and the "ability to feel comfortable at a black tie affair one day and the Yankee game the next."

"There is no secret – we share everything including our interests and constantly do things together," he said. "That’s been a good formula and a great pleasure in life."

On their first date, Loretta said, they spoke about everything, from concepts of Peter Drucker to Gregorian Chants, politics, sports, current events and shared stories.

"His smile and laughter is infectious," she said of her husband. "A scholar and a gentleman would be the best way to describe my first impression of him. In some ways we complement one another and contrasting on other levels. We challenge each other intellectually and not a day passes when we don’t make one another smile or laugh."

"I serve Sal breakfast in bed every day," Loretta Lagonia said. "Seriously, I do."

The couple also remains active in the town. Sal Lagonia has lived in Yorktown for more than 30 years and has a law practice in town. He is a member of Angel Flight and PALS (Patient Airlift Services) and transports sick patients who can't afford airfare to hospitals for medical treatment. His wife Loretta, who runs his law office, is an adjunct professor at Mercy College's master's program. Her volunteer work stems from her involvement with the Yorktown Lions Club. She also work part-time for Curves at the Underhill Plaza as a trainer.
