Support Connection Raises Cancer Awareness at Dragon Boat Race

Participants and supporters from Support Connection took part in the 2011 Peekskill Celebration festival, which took place at the city's Riverfront Green Park Friday and Saturday.

Friday and Saturday was the 15th annual Peekskill Celebration Festival, which was held at the city’s Riverfront Green Park

Saturday’s excitement began with the first round of the festival’s anticipated Dragon Boat Races, followed by the Dragons on the Hudson’s Cancer Awareness Race shortly after. When the Cancer Awareness Race ended, an emotional Rose Throwing Ceremony, where both spectators and race participants cast roses into the Hudson River, commemorated all of those who had their lives affected by the disease.

Approximately 20 supporters of , the non-for-profit Yorktown-based organiation that helps women who are affected by breast and ovarian cancer, participated in the festivities. Some were cancers survivors themselves, others were friends or loved ones of survivors or of people who had died from cancer. They had a team rowing in the Dragon Boat Race to raise cancer awareness.

"They want[ed] to pay tribute to those affected by cancer and to the people who support them," said Barbara Cervoni, director of services and communication for Support Connection. "They know it takes many people 'rowing together' to get through the experience. They also wanted to take part in the rose ceremony to remember those lost, which is such a moving ceremony."
