Somers Orchestra Concert, Local Relief Efforts, FEMA Applications Deadline Extended

Here are five things you need to know today, Dec. 13.

1. 

The Somers High School winter chorus/orchestra concert is on Thursday, Dec. 13 at 7:30 p.m. at the high school auditorium. Click here for more concert dates for the middle and intermediate schools.

2. Local Efforts to Help Hurricane Sandy Victims

A group of Lakeland Central School District teachers and staff are planning their second trip to help Hurricane Sandy victims – this time they are traveling to the Broad Channel area on Saturday, Dec. 15. This time they will be spreading some holiday cheer. If anyone is looking to help, donations are still being accepted. Items needed are bottled water, juice boxes, new unwrapped toys, and food (restaurant donations and home baked goods), wrapping paper, tape, warm clothes. Click here for more details.

3. Welcome Ceremony at French Hill School

There will be a welcome ceremony in the lobby of the French Hill School on Monday, Dec. 17 at 4 p.m. School officials will officially welcome the new tenants to the building. Members of the Board of Education, administration, tenants and contractors will be present, and the public is invited to attend.

4. Toy Drive for "Breakfast with Santa" in the Rockaways

Donate a new unwrapped toy for “Breakfast with Santa in Rockaway,” taking place on Dec.15.  Toys can be for toddlers up to teenagers. Donations are being taken through Dec. 14 at  Curry Honda on Route 202 in Yorktown Heights from 9 a.m. to 8p.m., Monday - Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday. They can also be dropped off at the North Highlands Fire Department on Fishkill Road in Cold Spring from 8 a.m to 6 p.m. Tuesday - Friday. 5. Deadlines Extended for FEMA Applications

The deadline for Hurricane Sandy survivors, including those from Westchester and Putnam counties, has been extended to Jan. 28, 2013. Federal disaster assistance for individuals and families can include money for rental assistance, essential home repairs, personal property losses and other serious disaster-related needs not covered by insurance. Individuals can register online at www.disasterassistance.gov or via smartphone or tablet at m.fema.gov. Applicants may also call 800-621-3362 or (TTY) 800-462-7585. Applicants who use 7-1-1 Relay or Video Relay Services (VRS) may call 800-621-3362. The toll-free telephone numbers operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week until further notice.

First of all, I don't understand why teachers are paying for anything out of pocket when the supplyRead More lists that parents receive at the end of the summer are as long as their arms. Secondly, SOCIETY lets the kids down?!?!? I think the school taxes in Yorktown should be sufficient so that the teachers don't have to pay any out-of-pocket expenses. SOCIETY does not let the kids down, it is those who are in control of the school tax monies who let the kids down. Perhaps the administrators should take salary cuts, or maybe we should even eliminate some of those administrative positions. No teacher should have to pay for supplies out of pocket.
