Somers Independence Day Celebration Features 5K Run, Taste of Somers and More

Somers is celebrating Independence Day at Reis Park this Saturday, June 29 with an all-day long extravaganza that will feature a 5K run, food, carnival games, face painting, sports, music and fireworks.

The day will begin at 8 a.m. with the fifth annual Lynn Adams 5K Run/1 mile Family Walk at Somers High School (register at www.active.com or onsite at Primrose Elementary School).

All proceeds from this event will go toward the Lynn Adams Memorial Foundation Scholarship Fund in honor of Lynn Adams, who was a beacon of volunteerism and community leadership throughout Somers, as well as a caring friend, loving wife and devoted mom.

"She was a tireless volunteer and community organizer in Somers who loved to walk and run," SEF Vice President Glenn Hintze said about Adams.

Adams lost her battle with cancer on Nov. 26, 2008 at the age of 49.

Afterwards, residents are invited to the Taste of Somers, which runs from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Pavilion Tent. Participating local businesses are La Fontane; Mamma Rosa; Patsy’s Pizza; Primavera; Pinnacle; Burger Barn; Somerfield; Somers 202; Fratelli Brothers; Ramiro; Cardillo Deli; Farmer & the Fish and Grand Central Deli.

Tickets cost $10 per person and proceeds will fund the Somers Lions Club community service projects.

The opening ceremony for the Somers Independence Day Celebration at Reis Park begin at 4 p.m. when officials will honor veterans and our nation. For a full list of activities throughout the day visit http://www.somersny.com.

The fireworks display begins shortly after sunset at Reis Park.

"Many thanks to all who donated to our fireworks fundraising drive," Somers Supervisor Mary Beth Murphy said. "We have almost met our goal so if you've been putting off your donation now is the time to help us reach the top. Happy Birthday to the United States of America."
