Shrub Oak Honor Roll: Memorial Day Ceremony Honors Veterans

Ceremony honoring the Veterans of our Armed Forces. Those that are still here with us and those whom have passed on.

Memorial Day is a day when many people take time to relax and celebrate summer's arrival, but its true purpose was to honor the men and woman who serve to protect our Freedom. To protect these rights from all who may seek to change our rooted belief of what America is.

A day of remembrance that is echoed by many including, Councilman Jim Martorano, who said, Memorial Day is an, “unspoken promise of, all of those who have given their ultimate sacrifice to insure our freedom shall always be remembered.”

It is for this reason that on this day, more than six veterans along with Honor Guard, Mohegan Fire Department  and Volunteer Ambulance Corps, families and Americans of the town gather at the Shrub Oak Roll: WWII Wall.

If for one moment we were to forget what Memorial Day means, then we can look at the faces of, Betty Gilbert (WWII-Nurse), William Gilbert (WWII-Corporal) and Orlando C. D’Angelo (WWII-Private First Class). These two men and woman, came to the Shrub Oak Honor Roll wall to honor all of those who sacrificed so deeply. For them, it’s a somber day. For many others, like Susan Siegel, Town Supervisor, it’s a reminder of our history and without it, she said, "we have nothing."
