Rotary Club Hosts 49th Annual Hole-in-One Competition

Competitors came out to the Route 202 fields to take their shot at winning the $1,000 grand prize.

One of Yorktown’s oldest traditions got a spark this year as the 49th annual Hole-in-One Competition added its first annual classic car show.

“It’s a good old slice of Americana,” said Kathryn Kraut, who brought her fully-functional 1969 Good Humor ice cream truck. “Instantaneously you’re like six or seven again.”

Both the car show and Hole-in-One Competition ran from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. For $10 or $15 – for 10 and 20 balls, respectively – competitors came out to the Route 202 softball fields to take their shot at winning a number of prizes.

The $1,000 grand prize went to the golfer whose ball landed closest to the pin. The three closest in each of the four categories – men, women, boys and girls – received compensatory prizes.

Among the prizes were: a sunset cruise on the Hudson River; a lunch certificate at Crabtree’s Kittle House; pizza from Yorktown Pizza & Pasta; and tickets to a show at .

“I think it’s a great tradition,” said Rotary Club President Lorraine DeSisto. “People come as children, grow up, and still come back.”

The Hole-in-One Competition is the biggest money-maker for the club, which frequently hosts fundraisers throughout the year.

Town supervisor candidate Michael Grace and town council candidate Tom DeChiaro came out the competition on Saturday morning. Both made early appearances on the leaderboard by landing within 7’8’’ (Grace) and 7’4’’ (DeChiaro).

Typically, winners land their balls within a few inches of the pin, which is 100 yards from the tees on top of the hill. The last holes-in-one occurred in 2009, when two golfers shared the grand prize.
