Jennifer Garner Picks Veggies at Hilltop Hanover Farm

Jennifer Garner picked veggies in Yorktown Heights on Thursday to kick off Frigidaire's Kids' Cooking Academy Summer Session in support of Save The Children.

Famous movie star Jennifer Garner picked vegetables with about 10 kids in Yorktown Heights Thursday morning to inspire families everywhere to cook together with fresh ingredients. 

She picked vegetables at  before heading over to Blue Hill at Stone Barns restaurant with Adam Kaye, chef and kitchen director at the restaurant for a farm fresh cooking experience, spokesperson Elizabeth Todrin told Patch. 

"I'm a huge fan and avid supporter of my local Farmer’s Market," Garner said during the visit. "Showing kids how foods go from farm to table is an important first step in creating healthy eating habits. The Frigidaire Summer School is a great way to educate kids and their parents about the importance of eating fresh."

Together, Garner and Kaye kicked off the Frigidaire Kids’ Cooking Academy Summer Session, in support of Save The Children, giving families the chance to learn about the seasonality of food and gain first-hand experience preparing just-picked ingredients.

Garner was joined by parents and their children who were invited to the visit with her. Numerous blogs reported on the cooking experience.

To help give more children access to fresh foods, Frigidaire is unveiling a partnership with Gowalla, a social media guide for people to share their favorite farmers’ market locations, memories, photos and stories as part of the partnership. Frigidaire will donate even more money to Save the Children, when users check-in at their local Farmer’s Market through the Gowalla app as part of the company’s total commitment to $500,000 to help children living in poverty in the U.S., Todrin said.

"We’re proud to be partnering with Frigidaire and Jennifer Garner to raise awareness for such an important and mobilizing issue," said Andy Ellwood, director of business development at Gowalla. "We’re working together with our community to encourage people to participate and show their support for Save the Children. It truly embodies Gowalla’s philanthropic mission, and is a great example of using social media for social good."

Save the Children’s Senior Vice President of U.S. Programs, Mark Shriver said the campaign helps to give every child an opportunity to develop healthy eating habits.

"Save the Children’s CHANGE program is working to provide children living in poverty in rural America with access to nutritious snacks, like fresh fruits and whole grains, and opportunities to get some healthy exercise," Shriver said. "With continued support from Frigidaire and Jennifer Garner, we’re helping give children the foundation they need for a lifetime of good health."

For busy parents, it can be difficult to ensure fresh, seasonal ingredients are on hand. But a little planning and preparation goes a long way.
