Garden Club to Hold Annual Plant Sale on May 7

When you buy your plants from the Garden Club of Yorktown, you help pay for our community gardens

The Garden Club of Yorktown will hold its annual plant sale on Saturday, May 7, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., in the Yorktown Green (K-Mart) Shopping Center, in front of Suburban Wines & Liquors. Unique plants specially selected by the Club’s Master Gardeners will be available for sale. Garden Club members will be there to answer questions and give planting advice.

“This is an opportunity for gardeners to learn more about plants that perform well in this region,” said Lou Ann O’Brien, president of the club, “and the bonus is that by buying at our sale, they are helping us with the annual plantings of our community gardens throughout the town.

“It’s definitely more than just a plant sale,” O’Brien added. “We have really unusual plants, and our members consult with customers about the best ones to buy for certain plantings, and they even help them put together their plant containers.” Most of the plants for sale are tried and true favorites of the members.

A wide variety of annuals and select perennials are for sale. Included are small and large hanging baskets of mixed flowers for sun or shade; pre-selected container collections; and specially selected annuals known to perform well in the area. The perennials offered are non-invasive.

The annuals aren’t just the varieties available at large mass-market stores, according to O’Brien. The Club offer favorites such as scaevola, petunia, impatiens and coleus, but in striking colors and form. There are a variety of salvia, verbena, lantana, calibrachoa (million bells and superbells), begonia and agastache that not only bloom all summer but attract butterflies and hummingbirds. And there are many other varieties for beds, baskets or containers.

Proceeds from the plant sale go toward planting and maintaining major town gardens. The gardens are in two high traffic islands, Route 202 and Baldwin and by Town Hall at Underhill and 118.

In addition, a butterfly garden in Railroad Park can be enjoyed from the bike path or Underhill Ave. The Garden Club also helps out by contributing plants and time for the Baldwin/Taconic and Route 6/Strawberry sites.

“These gardens can be enjoyed by everyone in Yorktown and situated at main entry points into town, “O’Brien said, “The best feeling is when we’re out on the road caring for the gardens in the heat of the summer, and people honk and yell from their car a 'big thank-you.'"
