Yorktown will "wage its annual war against litter" as residents take to town roadways to pick up litter and place it in trash bags on Saturday, April 21.

More volunteers are needed for what the Yorktown Department of Environmental Conservation calls "The Battle of Yorktown. Residents can catch the green spirit and celebrate Earth Day by volunteering for just an hour or two to pick up roadside litter and make the community cleaner.

"It's a dirty fact that litter degrades our roadsides," a message on the town's website said. "If you would like to pick up litter in your neighborhood, litter bags, safety vests and litter grabbers are always available."

Officials said it is important for individuals and groups to register before the event, so the department knows where to find and then dispose of the filled orange bags. If you would like to help outside of your neighborhood, there is a “Wish List” with specific road sides that are heavily littered, said Kim Angliss-Gage, coordinator for the town's Environmental Conservation Department.
