Boys & Girls Club of Northern Westchester Hosts Cocktail Reception for 2014 Humanitarian Award Dinner Committee

Committee members, friends gather at Blackstones Steakhouse to celebrate 75 years of serving youth

On Monday, March 31, Boys & Girls Club of Northern Westchester (BGCNW) staff, alumni and supporters enjoyed a cocktail reception in celebration of June’s Humanitarian Award Dinner. The event’s co-chairs, Linda Mahon, Lee Manning-Vogelstein, and Lisa Shrewsberry, were in attendance to help raise excitement for the upcoming gala.

At Blackstones Steakhouse in Mount Kisco, BGCNW Executive Director Brian Skanes thanked general manager Mike Ahmetage for generously hosting the Club as they celebrated the success of gala co-chairs Mahon, Manning-Vogelstein and Shrewsberry for their extraordinary efforts. Skanes also applauded Club alumnus and CEO of Curtis Instruments Stuart Marwell, this year’s Humanitarian Award recipient, and Marc Lener, Club alumnus and past Youth of the Year recipient, for their continued support of the Club.

“For me, the Boys & Girls Club of Northern Westchester was like a home.  For many kids, it is a second home, and for some, their first home,” Lener said.  “I came from a humble background, and with help along the way from the likes of staff at the Club like Dennis Munson, my swim coach, father figure, and friend, I was accepted into an Ivy League school and found success in my career.”

Upon graduating from the University of Pennsylvania in 2000, Lener began a five-year career as a high school science teacher in Washington, D.C., and then attended medical school at George Washington University. He is currently a psychiatry resident at Mount Sinai Medical Center where he is training to be a private practice psychiatrist and neurobiological researcher.

“I can’t thank the Boys & Girls Club enough for their support during my time as a member and now as an alumnus,” Lener said.

The 20th Annual Humanitarian Award Dinner will be held on June 7 at Lexus of Mount Kisco. The event is open to all, and former Club members, parents and volunteers are especially encouraged to attend to help celebrate this milestone anniversary. The cocktail reception begins at 6:30 p.m. Individual tickets are $350; sponsorship tables are also available.

“I’m honored to be a part of the Boys & Girls Club’s 75th anniversary celebrations and to be recognized as the 2014 Humanitarian Award recipient,” Marwell said. “As an alumnus, I take great pride in watching the Club continue to positively impact the lives of thousands of children in our area each year.”
