Walk through the Past, Save Lives in the Future

The public is invited for a personal tour through homes from the 1700's in the Historic House Tour of Yorktown. The tour, which will be held on May 1 from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m., is a benefit for Relay for Life - Yorktown, a fund-raising arm of the American Cancer Society.

The house tour is sponsored by Douglas Dill and Houlihan Lawrence Yorktown Brokerage, and all proceeds will go to Relay for Life - Yorktown. Participants will get an up-close view of the following historic homes:

  • The Elijah Lee House
  • The Underhill House (Maj. Andre House)
  • The Davenport House
  • The Daniel Strang House

The tour will include a memorable buffet lunch at Peter Pratt's. Tickets are $50 per person and $25 for children 16 and under. Purchase tickets at or email Gina Miller at originalmiller@optonline.net with the number of tickets you need. Checks can be made payable to The American Cancer Society.

Yorktown Relay for Life is an event that will be held June 10 -11 at Jack Devito Field from 7 p.m. until 7 a.m. The theme for 2011 is A Cancer-Free World...How Sweet it Would Be! The positive, fun and carnival-like atmosphere is a backdrop for teams taking turns walking around the track throughout the night to represent the fact that cancer never sleeps.

Yorktown's Relay for Life team has been incredibly successful in the 6 years it has been campaigning for "more people who are diagnosed with cancer to continue to celebrate birthdays for years to come." Last year they raised $280,000 and came in #1 in the NY and NJ Metro Region, and #3 in New York State! There are 101 teams signed up online for this year's event, and $47,000 has been raised to date.  Get involved here and help Relay for Life - Yorktown reach this year's fundraising goal of $300,000.

First of all, I don't understand why teachers are paying for anything out of pocket when the supplyRead More lists that parents receive at the end of the summer are as long as their arms. Secondly, SOCIETY lets the kids down?!?!? I think the school taxes in Yorktown should be sufficient so that the teachers don't have to pay any out-of-pocket expenses. SOCIETY does not let the kids down, it is those who are in control of the school tax monies who let the kids down. Perhaps the administrators should take salary cuts, or maybe we should even eliminate some of those administrative positions. No teacher should have to pay for supplies out of pocket.
