Community YMCA thanks 'A Day of Service' Volunteers

  • Editor's Note: Thanks to Maire Brosnan Katavolos for posting the news on Patch.

The Community YMCA of Northern Westchester would like to thank the many volunteers who came to the Y as part of the "A Day Of Service" initiative to honor the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The Volunteer Center of the United Way organized this group of volunteers to paint the toddler and preschool classrooms at the YMCA Learning Center in North Salem, NY.

"This event and these wonderful volunteers helped us refresh our Learning Center, this allows us to upgrade our childcare programs and to be able to continue to offer scholarships and assistance to anyone who needs our help.”  said Maire Brosnan Katavolos, Community YMCA, Executive Director.

I would also like to thank Larry Coleman, Sr. Safety/Materials Supervisor at AkzoNobel Surface Chemistry in Brewster. He saw our listing on the United Way’s website and donated all the paint we needed. Larry called me and allowed my staff to have fun choosing from one of the beautiful Glidden paint colors. We are so grateful and can’t wait to show off the beautiful redone rooms to the children.

First of all, I don't understand why teachers are paying for anything out of pocket when the supplyRead More lists that parents receive at the end of the summer are as long as their arms. Secondly, SOCIETY lets the kids down?!?!? I think the school taxes in Yorktown should be sufficient so that the teachers don't have to pay any out-of-pocket expenses. SOCIETY does not let the kids down, it is those who are in control of the school tax monies who let the kids down. Perhaps the administrators should take salary cuts, or maybe we should even eliminate some of those administrative positions. No teacher should have to pay for supplies out of pocket.
