Somers Schools Hold Holiday Food, Gift Drive; Lakeland Bond Vote; Leaf Collection

1) The Somers School District has sponsored annual holiday food and gift drives for less fortunate families within the community for over 20 years. During these difficult economic times we are seeing a dramatic increase in the number of local families who are in need of assistance. The district-wide Thanksgiving Food Drive is being held until Nov. 22.

2) Lakeland Central School District community members are asked to consider an approximate $14.5 million Safety, Security and Health Bond proposition that would include the addition of a wide range of safety and security items throughout the district’s schools. The voting will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 19 from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Van Cortlandtville Elementary School, 3100 East Main Street, Mohegan Lake. More details here.

3) The town of Yorktown’s Refuse & Recycling Department has started the collection of leaves. Leaves packed in 30-gallon paper biodegradable bags will be collected by the R&R crews in the orange trucks until Dec. 12 on your usual Recycling Day.

4) The Somers Historical Society's oral history collection is available thanks to technology, the Sound and Story Project of the Hudson River Valley and a host of other partnering organizations. Listen to a few reflections about President Kennedy's assassination by clicking here, including one from Somers historian Doris Jane Smith.

5) According to the National Weather Service, today is expected to be sunny, but cooler with highs in the upper 40s.
