Lakeland's 'Elementary Math Night;' Seniors' Pensions; Make Picture Frames

1) Parents and guardians are invited to the First annual "Elementary Math Night" in the Lakeland Central School District on Wednesday, Oct. 16. The evening's events will begin at 6:30 p.m. in Cafeteria A at Lakeland Copper Beech Middle School. Following a short opening presentation, attendees will move into one of five workshops.

The five workshop topics will include the NYS Math Assessments; the Common Core State Standards; My Math, the district's primary elementary school math resource; additional resources for parents, and the Engage NY online platform.

2) Assemblyman Steve Katz (R,C,I-Yorktown) is hosting a press conference on Wednesday alongside ProtectSeniors.Org to promote Assembly Bill 8161, which would protect seniors from pension stripping. The press conference will be held in Assemblyman Katz's district office, located at 824 Route 6, in Mahopac, on Wednesday, Oct. 16 at 2 p.m.

3) Enjoy the beauty of the park in autumn and read 'Room on the Broom; by Julia Donaldson and walk around the exterior of the Somers Library on Wednesday, Oct. 16 at 1 p.m. After you finish reading the book come into the library for a cookie (during library hours).

5) There is a slight chance of rain or drizzle before 9 a.m. on Wedensday, then a slight chance of showers after 2 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. It is expected to be mostly cloudy, with a high near 70. The chance of precipitation is 20 percent.
